We are Liberty and Big Country

Liberty and Big Country

Welcome!  We are Liberty and Big Country.

We’ve been married the better part of an adventurous decade, and our dreams and schemes keep on rolling. This year is no different as we’ve jettisoned our stuff, signed up for winter and summer house-sitting with travel in between, and are designing and building a cedar and alpaca tiny house on wheels.

We have two little toddlers whose bright spirits keep us laughing, hopeful, tired, and persevering. And a baby on the way, arriving in October!  Maybe we are crazy.

Our twenties follow a meandering path through the white-hot desert of Arizona, wooded campsites of Western America, jungley England, sun-baked Italy, and colorful Colorado.

Along the way, there has been backpacking Europe, taking scores of dubiously useful college classes, teaching high school, shepherding a church youth group, homebirthing our babies, learning traditional cooking, and now building an earthly nest. We’re Christian, libertarian, peaceful and on the hunt for the simplest and the most meaningful.

Liberty and Big Country backpacking

Every spring the wind will lift, and I find myself daydreaming of camping with motorcycles along the ocean.  With a sidecar for the babies, of course– I love my little family.  I don’t know if that restlessness will ever leave me.

But I am finding I can channel some of that restlessness into a pursuit . . . the pursuit of love for my family, liberty from financial bonds and social norms, and shelter for the body and the soul.  A high calling it is for a restless heart to provide the best spiritual, financial, nutritional, cultural foundation for my children that I can, to share with them a wonder of our Creator and the world around us.

Big Country is the perfect companion for these lofty pursuits and is an encouraging best friend and fellow dreamer.  He enjoys chopping wood, building fires, illustrating and designing, dancing along to world music, scoping out real estate in remote UK islands, and plotting our next backpacking trip up the West Highland Way.

For all the far-reaching dreams, for now we are grounded in the present, making one thousand interesting, creative, maddening decisions about tiny house design, framing, insulation, electrical, plumbing, siding, windows, and doors, and how it will all come together into a way of life and a way to free up enormous amounts of time and money.

This blog is a journal of all the best of what interesting and amazing things we stumble along this wild summer and beyond . . . join the pursuit of Love, Liberty, Shelter!
