Second Spring Progress on the Tiny House

In our family of five’s now two-year journey in completing our handbuilt tiny house while we live in it, I love compiling progress! And this, our second Spring, is no different.

First, all the previous seasons of tiny house progress: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and our Second Winter.

And now, this past few month’s tiny milestones of comfort and function . . .

Second Spring Progress on the Tiny House

  • Shade sails on both sides of the house for the summer. Vividly remembering the sweltering afternoons of last summer, we put up sails to ease the flood of hot sunshine streaming through our big 8′ window and making the front door’s knob burn our hands. We screwed bolts into the long sides of the house and drove stakes deep into the mud-prone land surrounding Tiny (remember last year’s swamp living? I do).

  • Gun rack on the wall above the big window. Easily reachable for Big Country, yet safe in a household of little kids.

  • Bathroom wall sided, window trimmed. Bye bye, visible alpaca wool insulation!

  • Bathroom ceiling / storage loft installed. Just like the other loft, Big built a pine stud frame, which he strapped to the wall, then filled in with more pine studs and then pine tongue and groove.

  • Shower curtain rod re-installed, new curtain.
  • Grey water outspout drain installed to better direct the used household water.

  • Wood chips dumped all around the house to mitigate mud and mosquitos. And they look good and feel nice to walk on, too! We still need many wheelbarrow loads more, much to Rig’s delight, as it’s his new favorite job.
  • Hooks for towels in the bathroom.

  • Tung oiling the interior siding finished.

  • Storage bench over the wheel well. This was a long-needed addition not only corralling toys, books, and kids’ clothes into one place but also adding seating. We plan to use this area as our primary dining room along with a pop-up Spiderlegs table very soon!
